FW: Matt Fischer’s LIMITING LXC MEMORY USAGE (aka How to limit the memory usage of Linux LXC containers and validate the memory limit)

I’ve been playing around with LXC over the past few weeks and one of the things I tried out was limiting the memory that the container is allowed to use. I didn’t plan on explaining all the ins-and-outs of LXC here, but a short description is that LXC provides a virtualizedish environment that is more than a chroot gives you, but less than a full-blown virtual machine. If you want more details, please check out stgraber’s blog post about LXC in 12.04.

Kernel Configuration
The first thing you need to do in order to limit memory usage for LXC is make sure your kernel is properly configured, you need the following flag enabled:

CONFIG_CGROUP_MEM_RES_CTLR=y

If you plan on also limiting swap space usage, you’ll also need:

CONFIG_CGROUP_MEM_RES_CTLR_SWAP=y

These flags are enabled for me in my 12.10 kernel (3.5.0-22) and so presumably you’ll have them in 12.04.
Setting the Cap

First, I’m going to create my container. Following the instructions from stgraber’s blog post, and calling the container “memlimit”:

Sybase SQL Server 11.0.3.3 for Linux – still going strong

Last night I helped a friend at a small company install, configure and tune Sybase SQL Server 11.0.3.3 for Linux using the same method as I used on HOWTO: INSTALLING AND RUNNING SAP / SYBASE SQL SERVER 11.0.3.3 ESD 6 ON UBUNTU LINUX USING KVM. No, I didn’t provide the software, they already had it.

There is something refreshing going to sybinit using ctrl-a to go to the next screen.  No X-Windows needed.  No Java.  Just a simple DBMS doing DBMS work.

SAP Sybase IQ 16.0 manuals fixed to work with tablet/phone PDF readers like Aldiko

Aldiko Book Reader Premium Full v2.2.3.apkMany PDF readers for smart phones (Android/iphone) and tablets manage the pdf files Calibre_Logobased solely on the Title and Author fields in the PDF file. While for this is fine for your average book, it is not all that helpful with manuals that tend to have abbreviated or no data in the title/author fields. In the case of the manuals for Sybase IQ, I’m unable to load the manuals for say v15.4 and v16.0 as they have the same Title/Author data.

How to fix? Easy. Go get Calibre. Drop the PDF files on to the running Calibre. Edit them by hitting the E key.

In my case, I edited the “Title”, “Author”, “Tags”, “Publisher” and “Languages”:

Calibre

Calibre doesn’t modify the PDF files themselves so I will need to export the files to a custom directory. In Calibre nomenclature, this is “Saving”. Highlight all the titles you want to export and hit “S” twice. Why twice? No idea. Choose the directory.

You can now copy the exported PDF files to your phone, tablet, whatever without fear of the v16.0 version of the P&T Guide being rejected by Aldiko because the v15.4 version is already added.

Here are the IQ v16.0 manuals that I’ve ‘fixed’ to work with Aldiko. They are identical to the PDFs on sybooks with the exception of the PDF fields I mentioned previously.

Confused on which SAP Sybase IQ index to use and why?

SAP Sybase IQ Indexes and Indexing Techniques

by Mark Mumy

Are you new to SAP Sybase IQ? Have you used the product but are still not clear on what indexes to use or when to use them? Have you just migrated to SAP Sybase IQ 16 and are wondering if there are any indexing changes? This blog will discuss indexes and strategies for SAP Sybase IQ.

Basic Indexes
When creating a table in IQ, a default index is placed on every column. This index is referred to as a Fast Projection (FP) index. In order to enable optimized FP indexes, one must set the Minimize_Storage option to ON.
set option public.minimize_storage=’on’;

FW Howto: List Invalid Views and fix the views in SAP Sybase IQ

From the fine folks at ARBIME:

select U.user_name + '.' + T.table_name
from sysobject O, systab T, sysuser U
where T.object_id = O.object_id
  and U.user_id = T.creator
  and O.status = 2 /* Invalid */
  and O.object_type = 2 /* views */

http://arbime.wordpress.com/2013/02/11/list-invalid-views-in-sybase-iq/

You can usually fix the invalid views by simply recompiling:

alter view MY_VIEW recompile

and enabling:

alter view MY_VIEW enable

You should review the changes made to any referenced tables/views to ensure that the invalid view doesn’t need to be rewritten.

Howto: Export your SAP Sybase case information from case-express (Andrew Mumford)

Andrew Mumford of SAP writes:

The following steps should allow you to export data from http://case-express.sybase.com/ :

  1. Log into Case-Express and select “List Cases” from the left navigation menu
  2. Select the desired options to define the criteria for which cases will appear in the list and press the “Submit” button to get a list of cases
  3. If the customer wishes they can export the list but this just gives what is on the screen
  4. To get the case details the customer has to select each case number one at a time from either the list on the screen or the exported list
  5. When a case is selected it brings up the detail screen
  6. From the detail press the “Print” button
  7. From the print screen press Ctrl-A to highlight all the content
  8. Press Ctrl-C to copy it to the clipboard
  9. Then in an application such as Microsoft Word press Ctrl-V

NOTE: If the customer wants to export hundreds this will be very time consuming
If the above steps do not work, or if you hit other access issues in case-express, I would suggest contacting your local Sybase Support number. select the non-technical support option, and our customer service team will be able to help you.
