When I
purchased Foundations of Qt Development (Expert’s Voice in Open Source) by Johan Thelin a few months back, I hoped to get to it right away but work and life diverted my attention. Today at lunch I dived into it. Even though I’m still going through chapter 1, I think I can give a hint of it:
Foundations of Qt® Development (Expert’s Voice in Open Source) is well written. He assumes that you have a little bit of C++ knowledge, avoiding into the trap that so many other authors do. You wouldn’t believe how many technical books I have where the first half or more of the book is simply a rehash of the basics. Forget that!
What I really like is that when he shows you an example of code, he explains why you would want to write it this way and how it differs from the Standard Template Language (STL – see C++ Programming Language, The (3rd Edition)). Where there are performance gains or penalties of using Qt instead of STL, he demonstrates it.
I never realized just how easy it is to write C++ using the Qt framework! Just the Signals and Slots alone make it very very powerful and that’s just the beginning. I’m completely blown away
I’ve been listening to the free audio book, Earth Core, by Scott Sigler on Podiobooks.com.
The premise is when a mysterious double sided platinum blade is found in a cave, the largest deposit of platinum (multi billion $$$) on the planet is discovered three miles under a mountain. A mining company, called Earth Core, needs not only to stake a claim but find a way to extract the platinum. The miners have their hands full when the platinum ‘deposit’ fights back.
From the super ex-CIA agent to the spelunking uber-geologist, the story is a wild one. I’m very impressed with Mr. Sigler’s ability to make the characters and the scenario seem very real.
If you are into adventure stories and a little gore won’t phase you, treat yourself to a good time by reading or listening to Earth Core. You won’t forget it.
I recently came across Fast Forward Radio by Phil Bowermaster and Stephen Gordon. I hope you enjoy their podcast as much as I do
Tune in every Sunday evening for a positive take on the future with Phil Bowermaster, Stephen Gordon, and some of the most fascinating people helping to shape the world that’s coming.
Four years ago, brian d foy, created the magazine, The Perl Review, dedicated to the Perl programming language. Unlike what you may have heard on Slashdot a few days ago, Perl is far from dead.
I’ve learned more about the Test modules than from Perl Testing: A Developer’s Notebook (Developers Notebook) alone.
Every quarter, I play a little game. When I receive the email from Brian informing me that the latest issue is available for download, I check my US Mail box to see if the printed issue was already delivered. Most of the time, I receive the printed issue within a couple days of the email. One day, I’ll receive the printed issue first. Observed time can be loopy like that.
I am an avid follower of the magazine and hope to have our MyDatabases as popular as The Perl Review.
Kudos to brian d foy and the article writers!
