A long time ago when I used iTunes on my WinXP laptop I was able to subscribe to the Too Jewish with Rabbi Sam Cohon & Friends podcast through the iTunes Store.  Since my main desktop runs Ubuntu Linux 9.04 and the RhythmBox Music Player is unable to retrieve podcast from the iTunes Store, I was at a loss as to how to listen to the podcast.

I sent numerous emails to the webmasters at toojewishradio@yahoo.com requesting a RSS feed of the podcast to no avail.  So… I wrote a small Perl application to create two RSS feeds:

  • All Episodes
  • Last 10 Episodes

Please note that I’m only generating and hosting the RSS feeds and NOT the podcast files.  The podcast is a product of Temple Emanu-El.

Most of you know my husband, Jason.  Well, I’ve been trying to figure him out for more than a few years now, and I think I’ve come pretty close.

He either suffers from ADHD, or Asperger’s Syndrome.

Wait, don’t laugh.  Hear me out.

When he is focused on something, it is with laserlike intensity.  A bomb could go off 3 feet from him, and he’d never even notice.  I’ve seen Miriam put things in his ear, but if he’s trying to figure out some new code, he doesn’t notice at all.  Hours later he wonders why he has cracker bits on his collar.  His social skills are, how to put this gently, not his strongest suit.  He’d much rather sit home in front of his computer, coding, than interact with people.  For years, he got along just fine with zero involvement with the opposite sex, at least of a romantic nature.  He just wasn’t interested in, or looking for, a relationship.  Hence, the thinking he might, if a child today, be diagnosed with Asperger’s.  Also, from talking to his mother, I’ve learned that he didn’t talk until he was 3, and barely engaged in imaginative play.  He was far more interested in building and sorting things as a small child, and being alone on his computer once older.  Seems to fit, no?

But, when something doesn’t have his laser focus, he has the attention span of a squirel who has just downed a 6 pack of Mountain Dew.  He is the most easily distracted, forgetful man I’ve ever known.  He’ll be half way through a sentence, and completely forget not only what he was going to say next, but the entire topic at hand, and even that he was involved in a conversation.  Something else will have caught his eye for half a second, and his brain is gone.

I’ve talked to his coworkers, and he’s the same way at work.  Sometimes, he’ll drop words, or even sentences from a paragraph (that he is speaking!) and not even notice that 1/2 of it is missing.  You look at him, and have no choice but to say “huh?” and his response? “I forget”.

Seriously, squirel.  Hence thinking he has ADHD.

So, I’m torn.  Does he fall under the autism spectrum, or the attention deficit hyperactivity spectrum?

Perhaps it is both.

Either way, having children with this man I’ve realized one thing: I’m totally screwed.

  3. Let’s get this straight; it’s called a ‘dirt road.’ I drive a pickup truck because I want to.
  4. No matter how slow you drive, you’re going to get dust on your Lexus. Drive it or get out of the way.
  5. They are cattle. They’re live steaks. That’s why they smell funny to you. But they smell like money to us. Get over it. Don’t like it? Hwy  1  &  2  goes east and west, Hwy 1 6  &  75  goes north and south. Pick one.
  6. So you have a $60,000 car. We’re impressed. We have $ 800,000 combines and hay balers that are driven only 3 weeks a year.
  7. So every person in rural  Manitoba  waves. It’s called ‘being friendly. Try to understand the concept.
  8. If that cell phone rings while an 8-point buck and 3 does are coming in, we WILL shoot it out of your hand. You better hope you don’t have it up to your ear at the time.
  9. Yeah, we eat meat and potatoes. You really want sushi & caviar? It’s available at the corner bait shop.
  10. The ‘Opener’ refers to the first day of deer hunting season. It’s a religious holiday held the closest Saturday to the first of November.
  11. We open doors for women. That is applied to all women, regardless of age.
  12. There’s little for ‘vegetarians’ on the menu. Order steak. Or you can order the Chef’s Salad and pick off the 2 pounds of ham & turkey.
  13. When we set a table, there are three main dishes: meats, vegetables and breads. We use three spices: salt, pepper, and ketchup.
  14. You bring ‘coke’ into my house, it better be brown, wet and served over ice.
  15. You bring ‘Mary Jane’ into my house, she better be cute, know how to shoot, drive a truck, and have long hair.
  16. Manitoba Junior  Hockey   League and Minor Hockey is as important here as the Maple Leafs and Montreal Habs, and more fun to watch.
  17. Yeah, we have golf courses. But don’t hit the water hazards — it spooks the fish.
  18. Colleges? We have them all over. We have Universities and Community Colleges. They come outta there with an education plus a love for God and country, and they still wave at everybody when they come for the holidays.
  19. We have a whole ton of folks in the Armed Forces. So don’t mess with us. If you do, you will get whipped by the best.
  20. Turn down that blasted car stereo! That thumpity-thump crap ain’t music, anyway. We don’t want to hear it anymore than we want to see your boxers. (Refer back to #1).
  21. 2 inches of snow & ice isn’t a blizzard – it’s a vacation. Drive like you got some sense in it, and DON’T take all our bread, milk, and bleach from the grocery stores. This ain’t Alaska , worst case you may have to live a whole day without croissants. The pickups with snow blades and tractors with snow blowers will have you out the next day.

Cookbooks are a lot like Dungeons and Dragons and other role-playing games. They contain seemingly rigid rules that, in practice, require a certain amount of adaptation for your own tastes.

So how come cooking gets its own TV channel and role-playing games don’t even get a show on G4? Maybe the population at large doesn’t want to pretend to be a half-elf. Maybe RPGs take more imagination than most people have.
